Pictorial Tapestries: Flamsk and Billedvev
Swedish tapestries woven in “Flemish” style, adapted from European tapestry techniques, are called flamsk in Sweden. They are typified by dovetail joins and simplified patterns. In Norway, the pictorial tapestry technique, also typified by dovetail joins, solid areas of color, and little hatching, is called billedvev.
Square Weave Tapestries
Swedish square-weave tapestries generally use a double-interlock technique, and are called rölakan. Norwegian square-weave pieces generally use a single-interlock technique, making them reversible, and are called rutevev.
