Norwegian Textile Letter, Spring 2026

You can jump right to the new issue here.

If you look carefully at the long, horizontal banner for this issue, you might be able to see the abstracted eyes and nose of a dog, from Swedish artist Emelie Röndahl’s monumental, wall-sized homage to her pet. Lisa Anne Bauch wrote about Handwoven: Between Chaos and Order, a major exhibit on view through June 7, 2026 at the American Swedish Institute (ASI) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. See the article for the whole dog image and many more: “The Tragicomic Everyday: Emelie Röndahl’s Rya.

Elsewhere in the issue, a surprising thread runs through two pieces: mittens with two thumbs appear in both Everyday Mittens and Mulavotten – The Mula Mitten.

History and the present moment meet in “We knit to keep from unraveling”: The Red Hat Resurgence, which traces a little-known strand of WWII resistance into recent events in Minnesota.

Twill on the warp-weighted loom using “double-notched heddle-rod supports” – same clunky name, new effective method. For those drawn to technique, Katherine Larson explores twill on the warp-weighted loom using “double-notched heddle-rod supports”—a name that may sound forbidding at first, but unfolds clearly (and usefully) as you read on.

The search continues in The Missing Works of Frida Hansen in America: An Ongoing Investigation. After the rediscovery of Sørover (Southward) in 2021, several major works remain unaccounted for in the United States—perhaps you have a clue.

Other articles carry us across time and place: Norwegian cradle looms and their American adaptations; evolving Scandinavian immigrant footwear traditions; and a review of Vovne Skattar, a richly illustrated book of woven bands from the Åmli region, where named makers and places reconnect us to the past.

And there is more to join in with: an international Flesberg weave-along invites participation, while Nordic News and Notes: Spring 2026 gathers essays, projects, and film to continue the exploration.

I’m having a problem with access to the articles and links. WordPress won’t open for me claiming neither email address I use is right. I’ve established a new password with them and it worked once, but not this time. Disappointing.
